Office Activities

: 2008 DOWL HKM Bozeman Office Rafting Trip; In late August, members of the Bozeman office organized an end of summer float. This event was dubbed the 3rd Annual Underhill-Dryer Float and for the first time, both namesakes attended. The event has grown to require two rafts this year with 12 participants floating the Yellowstone around the Livingston area. Dinner was enjoyed in Livingston following the float.
: 2008 DOWL HKM Helena Office Sushi Party; In late July, members of the Helena office spent an evening enjoying excellent company and first-rate food. Thanks to a good friend who happens to own a local restaurant, everyone had the luxury of using the freshest ingredients to create their own sushi dish. A pleasant time was had by all.
: 2007 DOWL HKM Annual Picnic
The Eastern Region hosted the DOWL HKM Picnic this year and held it at the Beartooth Mountain Christian Ranch outside of Columbus. Those attending were treated to a delicious lunch and a steak dinner following a day of numerous activities. The zip line proved to be one of the most popular events.
: Prickly Pear Land Trust Trail Building
DOWL HKM is "Committed to Community Enhancement" as demonstrated by the Helena office's volunteer project this summer. Taking one day out of their summer, all of DOWL HKM’s Helena employees volunteered their time to help a local non-profit, The Prickly Pear Land Trust, to build a new trail in Helena's south hills. Since the trail is not steep and wider than some other trails in the Helena area, hikers and mountain bikers can use this trail for leisurely activities.

Butte interoffice softball and volleyball games
Sheridan Spring Highway Litter Cleanup

Typical Internship Positions

Even though we do not have credit-oriented internships, our interns get paid for the work they do, whether they work year round or just for the summer. A typical intern at DOWL HKM could perform a wide range of duties including assisting one or many of the jobs that follow: surveying, field data collection, project planning and marketing, CADD drawings, and public meetings.

Scholarships

Currently, DOWL HKM supports annual scholarships through the Montana State University-Bozeman’s College of Engineering. To qualify for one of these scholarships, the recipient must meet the following requirements:

Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
Be enrolled in a degree-granting program of the College of Engineering
Preference is given to children of the employees of HKM Engineering and incoming freshman.

If for any year an otherwise qualified first-time recipient cannot be identified, then the scholarship is renewable for another year of study.

American Public Works Association: The American Public Works Association [APWA] serves its members by promoting professional excellence and public awareness through education, advocacy and the exchange of knowledge. With this in mind, this site will inform you of the most recent news in the engineering field.
American Water Works Association: This site includes information about education and training as well as the most recent happenings with water. With conferences, science and technology, and water publications, if you enjoy dealing with water, this is your site.

Journal of Engineering Education (alternate link): This journal is published quarterly by the American Society for Engineering Education and serves as an archival record of scholarly research in engineering education. This site gives the most recent academic publication providing coverage and analysis of higher education.
National Society of Professional Engineers: The NSPE Student page was developed as a resource for both high school and college students seeking information about engineering and the role engineers play in our society.
PLANetizen: The Planning and Development Network: A "public-interest information exchange" with daily news, announcements, and event calendar for the urban planning and development community.
Process Associates of America Conversion Factors: Extensive resource of conversion factors includes dozens of measurement types!
Project Lead the Way (PLTW): PLTW partners with schools in support of encouraging students in the fields of engineering.
