2008 Relay For Life
The Billings office sponsored a team in this year's Relay For Life held at the West High School Field Track on July 11-12 in Billings. There were 10 Billings employees (many with their spouses) who took turns walking the track during the event. Many more helped by purchasing bake sale items, attending fundraisers, and purchasing raffle tickets for a teddy bear made by Barb Turcotte. Rich Schilf’s kids were the lucky winners of the teddy bear. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

Fall Litter Pickup
The Sheridan office held its annual fall litter pickup in October. Sixteen turned out and gave two to three hours picking up litter between the Fifth Street and Brundage Street exits of I-90. Approximately 40 bags of litter were picked up. Picker-uppers gathered at Ole’s Pizza to relax sore back muscles and fill hungry tummies. Lynn Hill and Donna Willar-Orrell coordinated the fall pickup.

2007 United Way Day of Caring
Kurt and Mary Grabow, John and Meri Shoff, Sue Kutzler, Kevin Feldman, Tom Grimm, Ed Everaert, Andy Mattie and Mike Shoemaker participated in the United Way Day of Caring for Yellowstone County. Our project was to haul chipped bark to the trail that encircles the Lake Elmo site for the Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department. We were also charged with clearing the trail of excess branches and growth. Hard work and great company was the order of the day and a tremendous amount of bark was laid and raked leaving the trail well groomed for area users.

Local Food Drive
In the Holiday spirit of giving, the Bozeman office decided to use some of its Christmas party money and give it to local nonprofit organizations, in addition to collecting food for the local Food Bank. The office was split into three groups, competing against each other to collect a set goal of 300 pounds of food. Just before Christmas, the food was gathered up, weighed and delivered to the Food Bank; the subtotal was 292 pounds. The food drive continued on until their office Christmas Party/Potluck.

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is another project in which DOWL HKM volunteerism is visible. As part of Journey Church in Bozeman, Zach and his wife devoted 9 hours of work and helped install all the windows and exterior doors, sheet and shingle the roof, and insulate the exterior walls. The house was recently finished and volunteers were invited to the dedication ceremony.

Who We Are

History

DOWL HKM was founded in Billings, Montana in 1955 as Ben F. Hurlbut, Engineers. In these early years, the firm distinguished itself as a structural consultant providing services primarily to architects and other private sector clients. In 1965, A.T. Kersich joined the firm and the name was changed to Hurlbut and Kersich, Engineers. Five years later, David McCullough joined the firm to be known as Hurlbut, Kersich, McCullough.

In 1977, the firm officially became HKM Associates and operated under this name until April 1995 when the firm was acquired by MSE, Inc. MSE combined a portion of its company with HKM to form MSE-HKM, Inc. This merger resulting in forming one of the largest consulting engineering firms in the region.

In 2000, a group of senior managers within the company approached the corporate leadership and made an offer to purchase the HKM division of the organization. In an industry where the national trend was towards growth through corporate mergers and acquisitions, the new leadership at what became known as HKM Engineering, Inc. decided to concentrate on our core areas of expertise, and grow our company more organically through the natural development of staff and expertise over the years.

Today . . .

DOWL HKM continues to grow in number of employees and geographic coverage of our offices. We have added offices in Helena, Lander, and Great Falls just since 2003. On April 3, 2008,  HKM Engineering and DOWL Engineers merged and formed DOWL HKM. The new company has 14 offices in five states, more than 400 employees, and about $55 million in revenue.

Stewart Osgood, President of DOWL LLC, along with Karen Fagg, Vice-President of the Western States Division, leads a team of longstanding senior managers at DOWL HKM and a growing group of employee shareholders. This owner-management team is charting the course for future growth of the company and is responsible for making sure that every employee strives to fulfill our Mission by ensuring that every project and every client receives the attention they deserve.
